The quest for the perfect resin! Recently, an article I wrote on resin was published in Jewelry Artist Magazine (August 2008). When I set off to do the research, I was astounded by the variety of resins on the market! I was also astounded by the cost of them, the toxicity of many, and the different characteristics of them.
During the course of my research for the article, I scoured the internet with few revelations – although I did find UV resin to be very popular in the boating industry! (but it is toxic and must be purchased by the “drum”-next!) I contacted artist friends all over the country, who work in all kinds of mediums – asking – pleading – “what, where, how?” Each crumb of information led to another person or company to contact. Finally, I hit upon the needle in the haystack! I was visiting a friend who was in town exhibiting at a rubber stamp show. After the show, a group of people from the show and I went out to dinner. I was seated next to a woman who is very famous in the “craft industry” (she is on all the TV shows and tours the country for workshops, etc). I thought “If anyone knows about this “UV resin stuff” it is she!” – so I asked her and she knew about some UV resin a friend of hers had developed that had not even hit the market yet. I contacted her friend, got some resin and started playing……and fell in love (with the resin!). As I said in the article, I would marry this product I love it so much!
After writing the article and seeing how much all the supplies added up to (hundreds of dollars - and many of them didn’t work very well, equaling money wasted) just to be able to try them, I decided to sell the Magic-Glos myself and provide detailed instructions about it's use as well as a source list for all sorts of things!
